Post-Pill Bleeding: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
Hi!  I stopped taking the pill alittle over a month ago. I had a normal period two weeks after stopping the pill. About 4 days after the normal period stopped I started bleeding again and bleed for 9 days. Would it be possible to be pregnant or is it from stopping the pill?  Is it normal?  Help.  Christy

Answer
Hi Christy :)

Its always possible to become pregnant, when you come off any method of birthcontol.

However, it is suggested that when trying to have a baby, to give your body atleast 2 cycles, or 2 months for hormones to return to normal. The pill is a hormonal controception, so its going to take time for your natural cycle to be regular again.

Your symptoms are common, and I think its all to do with the hormonal changes going on in your body. Irregular bleeding, and spotting are common signs of that, and thats exactly what you are experiencing.

I would rule out pregnancy, because you are bleeding. As you know, when pregnant bleeding usually doesnt occur, and if it does ..its light and spotty.

Sounds to me, like your system is just trying to adjust. I would give it another month before becoming concerned about it. If your bleeding is still eratic, after the 8 week mark, then definately see your physician to have it evaluated :)

Hope this answers your question, and thanks for writing :)
