Irregular Bleeding After Abortion Pill: Causes & What to Expect

Question
Hello, I had a medical abortion at 5 wks pg. I am 30 years old. I went in for

my ultrasound and it didn't work as I had to repeat the process at 7 wks and

it did work. My dr confirmed the tissue had left my uterus via ultrasound. I

had a normal period 4 weeks later, with spotting up until that time, and went
on the pill. I went off the pill after two months and my first

cycle off was fine. But the the last two cycles, I have been spotting irregularly

after around Day 15-16 of my cycle. It is light spotting ranging from

brownish pink at first, very light. It is getting darker and heavier the closer

my period is. And is most noticable after intercourse. Do I have a hormonal

imbalance? I should note my periods were completely regular before I ever

got pregnant. I also notice my cervical mucus is drier and it's not the same as

before. What is happening? I want kids and am ttc now. How long does it take
for periods to go back to normal and I was told by my dr that a medical
abortion does not affect fertility. It has been over 6 mos since the procedure

Answer
Dear Kari,
First of all, there is absolutely no risk to your fertility from taking the abortion pill.  You will be able to get pregnant when you want to.
The most common complaints from the abortion pill have to do with what you are describing - you can have irregular spotting and bleeding for months after taking the abortion pill.  This is normal, and eventually it goes back to normal.
While it is hard to sort out what is causing your irregular bleeding, I am guessing that the past few months of spotting are more likely related to being on birth control pills.  I would suggest that you talk this over with your doctor, and just try a different brand.
I would emphasize that none of this is a problem, medically.  There are no problems with having irregular spotting or bleeding as you are describing.  Of course it's annoying and difficult, but it's nothing to be concerned about as far as your fertility or your health.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
