Accidentally Took Wrong Birth Control Pill? Here's What to Do

Question
I am on birth control and have never made a mistake with it, but I just realized that, though I am in the first week, I accidentally took the third pill from the second week.  What should I do now?

Answer
Dear Wendy,

I would suggest taking the pills from the pack from here on out as you normally would. For instance: Instead of taking Thurs of WK1, you took Thurs of WK2. So... Today (Fri), you take Thurs of WK1 and continue on. You're going to be a day off, so make a new notation on the days at the top (or wherever) so you don't get confused while you are not taking the pill for the day specified. You may also have a bit of spotting during this cycle since the hormones were altered from what they normally are. It should be a one-cycle occurrence if it does happen and it should not affect your period.

That is my best advice. If you would like to confirm, you can usually find a customer service number on the insert that comes with your pack of pills or call your doctor or pharmacist.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
