Early Pregnancy Concerns: HCG Levels & Possible Miscarriage - 5 Weeks 3 Days

Question
Hi,
I miscarried 3 months ago and am concerned that it may be happening again.  I got my last period on 10/17, but when I took an ovulation test it showed 11/2-11/3 as the days we should try to conceive.  We got a positive result and I have had to hcg test.  7 days ago it was 1660 and today it was 19,000.  I had brown discharge last night so I went in for an u/s today.  According to my calculation I am 5 weeks and 3 days.  She saw signs of an early pregnancy and said she saw fluid and what looked like a sac, but no fetus. She also saw no blood.  She was concerned that she didn't see a fetus based on my HCG levels of 19,000.  I have had mild cramping, but only one spot of brown discharge and nothing since.  Should I have seen more on the U/S?  Am I miscarrying again?  I am very scared and don't know what to think.

Thank you for your time!
Ashley

Answer
Dear Ashley,

The gestational sac can usually be visualized as early as 4.5 weeks of gestation and the yolk sac at about five weeks. The embryo can typically be observed and measured by about 5.5 weeks.

The fact that your hCG is 19,000 and has risen and is not falling is encouraging. I would suspect that your doctor will want to do another ultrasound in about one week to see if there is further development and a measurable fetus. All you can really do is wait until then and see what happens. Try to stay calm and think positive thoughts.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and will have a good thought for you.
