Running While Pregnant: Understanding and Managing Swelling (Edema)

Question
I am 26 weeks pregnant and have cut back my regular running routine (20-25 miles/week) to about 12-15 miles/week. I have recently noticed that my calves/shins are a bit swollen (edema?) and it's made running very uncomfortbale. My lower legs feel extremely heavy and very tired and I can barely get through a 30 minute run without stopping. Is this common? Will it go away? What can I do to reduce swelling? Thanks

Answer
I doubt that the swelling that you are experiencing is related to running, especially since you were well adapted to that level of physical activity before pregnancy.

Since swelling of the calves can be an indication of a serious pregnancy complication, pre-eclampsia, please make an appointment to see your OBGYN today.
