QuestionHi, my wife and I have struggled to become pregnant for over a year. We have gone through the process of IVF and just recently finished the embroyo transfer. Our first blood test indicated an HCG level of 7.2, so we were very excited and encouraged. We did our second blood test this morning, 48 hours after the first test. The level indicated 10.6. The doctor said he would have liked to see our level at about 20 and he had some concern, but that was all he said. Is there any reason to feel at all optimistic or are we likely not going to be pregnant? Thank you.
AnswerDear Shaun,
hCG levels can rise slowly in the first days. Typically, we do like to see those levels double every 48-72 hours in a healthy pregnancy. However, the level did rise, and it may have doubled at the 72 hour mark, so I would not in any way suggest giving up all hope quite yet.
Right now, all you can do is wait and see what happens. I'm sure your doctor will keep an eye on things, but please don't let every small detail get you discouraged until there would potentially come a time when an ultrasound would confirm a non-viable pregnancy or your wife would actually miscarry. I know this is hard when so much effort has gone into the process, but try to relax and take a breath. :-) Stress and worry can only bring a negative influence into it and you want positive influences as much as possible.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
