Understanding Delayed Labor: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
My daughter is 4cm and is not contracting at all. Last week she was contracting 5 to 8 minutes. All contractions has stopped for 3 days now and is only feeling pressure below. What does this mean and will her contractions start soon?

Answer
Dear Monica,

Unfortunately, there is no way to know when contractions will resume. The contractions she was feeling before may have been Braxton-Hicks contractions. She should be aware of any increase in the pelvic pressure or low back pain however. Sometimes contractions can refer pain to these areas. If discomfort in these areas increases, she should feel the top of her tummy to make sure that it is not getting hard which would indicate contractions. Here are some signs of true labor:
-Contractions come regularly, usually 4-6 minutes apart and can become closer together. Usually last 30-70 seconds.
-Contractions become stronger with time. You may also feel vaginal pressure.
-Contractions continue no matter what position changes you make or how much fluid you drink - unlike Braxton-Hicks.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and a blessed arrival of your grandchild.
