QuestionHi Brenda,I am 22 years old. When I was really young, about 3 yrs, my house caught fire and I was exposed to 3rd degree burns on half of my upper stomach. I recently put on a little weight and the fat piles up only on the lower part of my stomach. Is it that the burned part of my upper stomach cant stretch and that might cause me major problems later in pregnancy.
Is there any other kind of risk it might relate to?
Thanks
AnswerDear Katie,
I would suspect that this is related to the lack of elasticity in the tissue that was burned. You didn't make clear whether you actually ARE pregnant right now, but if not, I would definitely recommend seeing a burn specialist prior to a pregnancy to discuss this issue. In fact, I'd see one even if you are already pregnant. Obviously, this is a unique situation. I'm quite sure that it has happened before, but I personally do not have any experience with this particular situation. Therefore, I would not want to "guess" as to what possible problems the scarred tissue might pose to a pregnancy and would not be familiar enough with the treatments that would be available to expand that tissue. Your best resource would likely be a burn specialist.
I'm quite sorry I could not be of more assistance to you, but there is not much information out there on this and I just am not one of those who will "fake" an answer to try and appear more knowledgeable. :-) I do wish you well!
Brenda
