QuestionI had my Mirena coil fitted on august 2007, everything went well until the 4 months. I have experienced all kinds of side effects and 2-3 weeks ago had pregnancy symptoms, fatigue, vomiting,... late "spotting" (which I actually had 5 days after they where due, but different than usual) - which led me to have it removed since the pregnancy test was negative.
Now it has been removed 3 days ago, everything seem to come back to normal the first 2 days, but now my breast tenderness is actually worse then when I had the Mirena, and I also feel some kind of muscle pulling in my lower abdomen.
Could I be pregnant even though I had negative test result while on Mirena? Can the mirena effect the results of a pregnancy test?
Thank you.
AnswerDear Mireille,
No - the Mirena would not affect the pregnancy test result. It sounds to me like it is possible that, since the body is now sensing the lack of hormones which were supplied by the Mirena, it may have stimulated ovulation 2-3 days after removal. That would explain the feeling of abdominal "pulling", which was probably some ovulation pain, and the breast tenderness.
However, if you continue to suspect that you may have conceived a pregnancy, my suggestion would be to re-test in another 7-10 days. Make sure when testing to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
