Understanding Early Pregnancy Ultrasound Results: What to Expect

Question
Hi there,
I have an irregular period normally, however know 100% that my LMP was on Feb12/08. When I went in for my first U/S I should have been almost 8 weeks, however the tech. said it looks more like 6w3d. I was then told that they could see the yolk sac and fetal pole but are unable to see the heartbeat. What does all this mean? Should I expect to miscarry? I am so confused...

Answer
Dear Shell

Determination of the gestational age in the first 6-8 weeks of pregnancy relies on measuring the yolk sac and the normal range of this is very variable. U can be 8 weeks pregnant bur measures six and vice versa. The same applies for heart beats if u usually have irregular cycles.

I recommend a vaginal ultrasound in 2 weeks and if the heart beats are not seen at that time, a miscarriage can be diagnosed.

Good Luck
