Birth Control & Missed Pills: Understanding Yasmin Discontinuation
QuestionI'm currently on Yasmin birth control. I started over a year ago on something else but was switched 4 or 5 months ago due to sickness. I ended my period May 31 and started up my regular Sunday routine. However Tuesday I forgot so I took it about 9 hours late, Wednesday I forgot, I took it late as well and after that I realized you're not protected anymore so I saw no need to continue. In the sheet it says to discontinue if you mess up twice. So I stopped. I don't know for sure if my boyfriend and I were active on any of these days but now for some reason I'm on my period again (June 10) This has never happened to me before and I'm a tad bit nervous...Do you think this is from my pills or do you think there's a possibility I'm pregnant?
AnswerDear Kris,
More than likely it is from the discontinuation of the pills. Your body is really confused about the drop in hormones and so it thinks it is time to bleed.
The literature you cite confuses me. My advice for you - if this should happen again - would be to continue taking the pills as you normally would and use a back-up method of birth control (like condoms). That way, your body remains in the same cyclic hormonal pattern it is used to and does not experience this type of unusual bleeding AND you are having to use another method anyway, so... what's the difference? Plus, effectiveness is definitely decreased, but not necessarily eliminated, when you miss/delay pills. So, you'd have a little bit of extra protection in staying on the pills throughout the pack.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
