Birth Control Pill Error: What To Do If You Miss a Pill - Urgent Advice

Question
QUESTION: I must warn all, this is complicated! I have been on birth control for roughly 3 years or more, and I have always used the "Sunday Start". Last month, I decided I would rather the Saturday start, because it was more convenient for me. Unfortunately, since I was so accustomed to starting on Sunday, I didn't pay enough attention to which pills I was taking! At some point, I must have glanced at the pack and thought that I missed a pill, and taken it. At the end of the day, I am on my second week of the pack. There are 3 pills left in the second row and the first 2 missing from the third row!! I still don't know how I managed to do this, but somehow over the course of the weekend, I must have taken 4 pills. What do I do? I realise that I need to stick with the Sunday start from now onwards because I can't afford to make these careless mistakes again! Should I finish the pack knowing that there are technically 2 pills missing? Another thing, my breasts are hurting! I can't be pregnant right? I had my period beginning on the 12th of March...so that can't be a sign already...right? Please advise me on what to do...so that I can continue with the pills and get on with my life!
ANSWER: It looks like you took extra pills. But are you sure you didn't loose them somehow and not take them?

Pregnancy is always possible, even for women that take the pills religiously. But in the case you describe it is unlikely because you didn't miss any days and maybe even took more than one per day.

I suggest you call the person who prescribed the pills for you. They will probably suggest you take the remainder according to where you are in the pack right now and then begin on your regular Sunday again. You may want to use barriers until you are finished with the first week of your new pill pack.

Finally, read the little piece of paper that comes with the pills.

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your answer, it has really put my mind at ease! One more thing though. When I get to the two pills that are missing...do i just forget them and skip forward to those that are still there? (the ones following the missing ones). So, in truth, I will end the pack two days earlier than I usually would? After this, should I start the very next Sunday? Or wait a week first? Is it then possible for there to be NO period this month? If so, this will make me more nervous about the pregnancy possibility!! I do, however, have a home pregnancy test....to ease my mind once again...when should I do the test, if my period is not going to come?

Answer
I again suggest to you to call the person who prescribed the pill to you. I would expect you to get your period about the same time and begin the next cycle of pills without waiting the extra week.

If your period does not come wait about a week after you miss it and take the home test. I suggest you read the instructions in the home test. They should tell you when to take the test. Make sure the test has not passed the expiration date.
