Possible Pregnancy After Limited Sexual Activity: What to Do

Question
My boyfriend & I have been fooling around lately. I have never engaged in sexual intercourse before,
but lately we've been experimenting in which he sticks his penis into my vagina for a few seconds (at
the very most, 15 to 20 seconds) and doesn't go all the way in (except for the last time), and pulls out
before he ejaculates.

I've been on birth control (Yasmin) for probably about 8 or 9 months now, and I take it AROUND the
same time every night, every day. The last day of my 28-pill pack for Yasmin was Tuesday and I was
supposed to get a new set/prescription on Wednesday. The pharmacy screwed up my prescription
and I was unable to take Yasmin on Wednesday and Thursday and forgot to take it on Friday night as
well. My boyfriend & I fooled around (he stuck it in me about 3 times) on Thursday. On Friday
morning, I took one Yasmin but forgot to take another at night. Saturday, I doubled the dosage and
took 2 at night to make up for it. Then got back on track on Sunday.

I am worried about pre-cum. I realize that my boyfriend pulled out long before he ejaculated, but I
was REALLY wet and my secretion from my vagina enabled me to be well lubricated, so he slipped his
penis right in. I understand that guys are unable to tell whether or not they are about to pre-cum, and
I am worried that his pre-cum got inside of my vagina.

Am I going to get pregnant? And when will I be able to take a pregnancy test to ensure accurate
results? Does it matter that he wears briefs instead of boxers, so he has a lower sperm count and that
I had ended my period about a week before we were fooling around?

Answer
Dear Rachel,

OK, first... you said you have not had sex yet, but I need to tell you - you are having sex. If a penis is entering your vagina - you are having sexual intercourse. It does not matter whether there are 3 strokes or 30 - it is still sex. You are minimizing your chances of conceiving a pregnancy by lessening the amount of time the penis is in contact with your vaginal canal and not allowing ejaculation into the vagina AND using the BCP, but you are not eliminating the risk completely - 100%. Sex is sex and always has risks - not only of pregnancy but also of STDs.

So, let's go from there and assess the amount of risk for you. Again, you are keeping your risk of pregnancy low by the following:
- minimal actual intercourse
- using withdrawal method (removal before ejaculation)
- taking the BCP and usually very faithful with pill-taking

The fact that you were on approximately cycle day 7 or less is also in your favor. Ovulation typically does not take place until CD 14 for women with 28 days cycles, so even if you would have ovulated (which the Yasmin suppresses) you would not likely have ovulated yet in the cycle. (Boxers/briefs - really makes little difference with young men - under 30. Most are quite fertile and have ample amounts of sperm cells available.)

If you would like to test to make sure, you generally need to wait until a period is missed. Although some tests claim accuracy on the first day of a missed period, I usually suggest that women wait until the week after a missed or spotty period before testing for pregnancy (this usually coincides with approximately 3 weeks after a potential conception). This tends to minimize the incidence of false negative results and also avoids wasting money on a test for a simple delay of a period by a few days. When/if you test make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
