Monoamniotic Twins & Bedrest: Exercises, Blood Clots & Bed Sores

Question
My daughter-in law is pregnant with monoamniotic twins and just was put on bedrest at the hospital due to same.  She is around 25 weeks and Dr.'s hope that twins won't be delivered until 32 weeks.  My question is:  what about her legs, is there exercises she can do and what about blood clots and bed sores?  This is along time for her to be in bed.  Right now, she can only get up to go to the bathroom and to shower.  Let me know if this is something to be concerned about.  Thanks.

Answer
Dear Terry,

Bed sores should not be an issue for her, since she can get up to the bathroom and to shower and she can re-position herself as frequently as she needs to while resting. A bed sore develops when blood supply to the skin is cut off for more than 2-3 hours. However, if she or any family members do start noting reddened areas, just make sure to keep the area clean and dry and you can purchase a piece of sheepskin or an eggcrate mattress pad for her to rest on to minimize this.

As far as leg exercises, knee bends and plantar flexion exercises (alternating pointing toe down then back toward ceiling, if lying down) are perfectly fine to help with leg circulation. Again, getting up to the bathroom and to the shower will help with this, but while resting for the remainder of the day, she can do this to help time pass and keep that circulation moving.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you and your family well.
