Navigating a Second Pregnancy After Preeclampsia & MTHFR

Question
Last year, I developed severe preeclampsia at 26 weeks and lost my baby girl. I found out that I have MTHFR as well as a clotting disorder. Right now, I am taking 2,000mcg of folic acid and a baby asprin every day. My fetal-maternal doctor said that the next time I would be monitored very closely and would start Lovenox or Heperin shots as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed. He said the chances of me developing preeclampsia again is very high but most likely will happen later in the pregnancy and be less severe. I can't remember exactly what we had discussed since I was still grieving over the loss of my daughter, but I think he said we were shooting for 28 weeks and anything after that would be great. I am just wondering if there is any way to know about how many weeks I will be pregnant or what is normal in this situation. I am a teacher and trying to decide when the best time to start trying is. If you can help me that would be great. Thanks!

Answer
Kim,
Your doctor can not possibly determine when or if you would develop preeclampsia again. That is immposible to say. He shouldn't be telling you this. Yes, you are at a higher risk for developing preeclampsia again, but it's certainly not written in stone. Sometimes women don't ever have it again and carry a baby to full term. Every pregnancy is different. I would imagine next time you would be monitored more closely and taken better care of. Hope this helps. Good luck!
