Umbilical Hernia During Pregnancy: Risks, Treatment & Second Opinions
QuestionI am 21 weeks pregnant and have just been diagnosed with an umbilical hernia. My OB seemed to think it was not too concerning but that I should have a surgical consult anyway. Well, the surgeon wants to do the surgery while I'm in my second trimester since he feels it is "no big deal".. I was FLOORED! So, needless to say, I am getting a second opinion. However, I wanted to know if it was common place for hernia surgery to be done while pregnant. I have only had one episode of pain and since then have felt fine. It just seemed rash to me for it to be done if I am not in pain? Could you share with me your experiences in people having this surgery when pregnant as it makes me very nervous.. Thank you so much! Melissa
AnswerIf you are not having any pain or discomfort at the present time, you can delay repair of the hernia until after the baby is born. If you end up having a cesarean section, it can be repaired at the same time. There is no danger in repairing it during the second trimester of pregnancy, however there is always the risk of preterm labor or anesthesia risk to you and to the baby. It is done all the time, but it would be safer to wait until after the prgnancy if you can tolerate it. If, of course, the discomfort is unbearable or if the surgeons believe you may develop problem with sequestration of bowel, then follow their advice. A second opinion is the correct thing to do.
