Understanding Cervical Length During Pregnancy: A Post-Loss Concern
QuestionHi, I am 25 years old and 20 weeks pregnant. I lost my twins this Feb at 19 weeks due to bacterial infection. In this pregnancy everything seems fine with cervical length of 4.1 until 19 weeks. But this time I went to doctor she noticed my length was 2.8 but when she put pressure on my belly it was funneling to 2.1. All I wanted to know was could the technician have made a mistake in checking me because whenever I go this centre the technician tells my cervical length lesser as compared to when I go to Stanford hospital with better technology. If no then should I go ahead for a cerclage considering the risks involved in cerclage. Is a little bit of funneling normal ?
Thank you so much for your help !
AnswerMaahi,
I am sorry for your loss in February. Sometimes there are inconsistences with different technicians and different machines. I am wondering given your history, why you have not been referred to a perinatologist (high risk OB doc). I would rely more on the Stanford results. If your OB is recommending a cerclage, then I would follow their advice. Funneling is common, but not normal. Most likely you are, if you're not already, going to end up on bedrest. It is possible to continue with this pregnancy, but I would think a cerclage would be much more safer. You just don't know what your body is going to do. If they are offering a cerclage, I would go for it. Good luck to you!
