Understanding Cervical Station: What Does -2 Mean During Pregnancy?
QuestionI am 21 years old. I am 32 weeks into with my first pregnancy, and it's a boy! My queston to you is this: This past Tuesday I had a cervical exam following my fetal monitoring apointment. The nurse had said that i was negative 2 in dialation. What does this mean?
AnswerYou misunderstood the nurse. A -2 station is how far the baby's head is in the pelvis. At 0 station, the head of the baby is engaged. Above that is -1 and -2 station and closer to the vagina is +1 and +2. When we speak of dilatation, we talk about progressive opening of the cervix until it reaches 10cm. 2cm is a very tiny opening.
