Postpartum Bleeding & Return of Menstruation: What to Expect
QuestionI gave birth to my first child on June 22/09. On Aug 11/09 I went to see my obstetrician for my 6 week check up. I got a prescription for birth control pills - the same kind I was on prior to getting pregnant. I started them the following week. I have now taken two packs and didn't get my period during the "week off" in either month. Since this was my first pregnancy, I'm not sure if this is normal. My husband and I have resumed having sex but not until after I started the contraception. Could I be pregnant again so soon?
AnswerHi Tricia,
It is normal to have no period after birth as your body is trying to return to normal. Most likely you are not ovulating so your chance of being pregnant again is low. If you are breastfeeding it can cause irregular periods. When your body is producing milk, your pituitary glands will produce more prolactin, a substance known to suppress ovarian functions. Do not worry just yet as your body will return to normal again soon.
