Shoulder Dystocia After Vaginal Birth: Understanding Risks & Options

Question
I'm Pregnant with my second child due January 29th 2010. I had Shoulder Dystorsia with my first child and the doctors are pushing for me to get a C-Section this time around and I really don't want one. It's not that i'm afraid of the C-section more or less the needle from the epidural/spinal. My doctors are sending me for an ultra sound at 36 weeks which is the first week of January to see how big the baby is. My daughter was 6 lbs 11 oz and if he seems like he's going to be bigger than that they want me to get the C-section. I don't like the fact of picking the date my son will be born. I would rather him come when he is ready. I would rather have a natural birth then a c-section, My daughter wasn't breathing when she first arrived and the doctors were really scared, I don't want anything to happen to my son but  What do you think I should do.

Answer
No two pregnancies are the same, and no two deliveries are are the same either. Your doctors are taking the most conservative stance possible, one that protects themselves as much as you and your baby.

Lots of women deliver babies well over 7 pounds without complications or a "C." From what you describe, it sounds like you doctor is not listening to you, or valuing your opinions. I suggest that you get a second opinion. If your baby is in the correct position for birth, then you should be able to deliver naturally. Second labors often go more quickly and easily than the first.

Ultimately, this is a decision that you should make, with your doctor's approval. If you try for a natural birth, and complications do arise during labor, then you can always have a "C" at that point anyway.
