Early Pregnancy Symptoms & Testing: What to Know

Question
I have my priod every 24 days (counting from the first day of my period). I have been trying to concieve. I am a day late, which never happens, I am usually early if there is a change. I took a pregnancy test and it is negative. I am wondering if because women usually have there period every 28 days maybe the info on all preg tests are calculated on a 28 day cycle. So, could that be why the test is neg, because according to the test i am testing too early? I hope this makes sence.

Answer
I think it will be nearly impossible for you to get pregnant with a 24 day cycle.  There isn't enough time between ovulation and your period starting for the pregnancy hormone (progesterone) to get going.  From the beginning of your period (day 1) to ovulation can be 14 or more days.  If your period starts sooner than 14 days after ovulation, there is a problem and it seems you may have what is called short post-luteal phase.  There are natural treatments you can try to get this period to get longer.  You could possibly have a thyroid problem, too.

Vitex is an herbal supplement you can take and there is Optivite, which is a multivitamin that might help.  Some people recommend using progesterone cream.  Omega 3 fish oil is a good supplement for lots of health problems, so it wouldn't hurt to take that, too.

This website:  http://www.ovulation-calculator.com/shortcycle.htm
has a good article on menstrual cycles and in particular this problem you seem to have.  They have recommendations that might help you.

Once you get your cycles to lengthen (and this is definitely possible) you should be able to get pregnant (if you ovulate).  I recommend that you look into charting your cycles and tracking the signs of fertility.  This will help you if you ever need to go to a doctor for more invasive treatment.  But try more natural approaches first, if you can.

Best of luck.
