Possible Pregnancy: Understanding Missed Periods & Uncertainty

Question
QUESTION: all the way in Febuary i had sex with an ex boyfriend and we used NO! form of birth control not even the pull out method. i didn't come on my period in Febuary.and in march my period came on very light for about a day. it skiped april and then this month it came on for 2 days. the boyfriend i have now says that im pregnant, ex says that i came on my period so im not. i'm only 17 could i really be pregnant?

ANSWER: Dear Krissy,

It sounds like it is a possibility for the following reasons:

1. The sex was unprotected.
2. You have not really had a full period since the unprotected encounter.
3. Many women experience spotting of a day or two in early pregnancy.

If you had regular periods before this encounter that lasted 3-5 days in length and were of a moderate volume, then you have not had a period.

You need to test for pregnancy. Make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results. If you did conceive in February, you would be approximately 14-17 weeks pregnant at this point, depending upon when your LMP date was. I can't imagine that you would not have noticed some physical changes or other pregnancy symptoms by now, but stranger things have happened!

Go ahead and test - it's not something that you can put off because it doesn't go away by not testing. If you are pregnant, you need to know that. If you aren't, you won't have to worry about it anymore - but you will need to see your doctor so that a cause for the missed periods can be determined. You may have acquired an infection of some sort which is affecting your cycles.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.

QUESTION: in march and april i was feeling sick to my stomach, but this month its gonna to a sick feeling right along with feeling dizzy. like i might faint. if i am pregnant is that normal?

and people say that by 14 weeks you should be able to feel the uterus. how do you know where to feel and what your feeling? b/c i really most likely am because my stomach has gotten bigger.

Answer
Dear Krissy,

Yes, those are typical signs of early pregnancy, but they are hormonal in nature. Again, you would have to test to know for sure whether they are actually due to a pregnancy or from hormonal fluctuations.

By 14 weeks, your uterus is about the size of a grapefruit and is usually just noted as firmness or hardness in the lower abdomen. However, many women at that point are needing to start thinking about maternity clothes or are wearing more elastic waistbands. You may have developed a dark line down the middle of your abdomen to your pubic bone called a linea nigra at 14 weeks. The areola (dark nipple portion of your breasts) may have darkened and gotten larger by 14 weeks as well.

Hope that helps - be well and get that test to be sure and end your wondering!  :-)
