Understanding Ovulation & Conception: A Guide for Couples

Question
Hi,
My fiance and I have been together for 4 years, and for 2 years we have been trying to concieve. I have never experienced a pregnancy. I don't want to go to the doctors and get a fertility test done incase all hope is dashed. However, I'm finding it hard to work out when I'm ovulating. I cant really understand the information I find on the internet etc. My periods have started being irregular and Im not unwell, stressed etc. I sometimes have a period that lasts 3 days, then they come again in about 2 months time. There is no telling how long there going to last when they come, or even if there going to come! How can I get pregnant not knowing when I am ovulating?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Answer
I'm sorry to have taken so long to answer.  I thought I had cleared up all the pending questions but I guess I missed yours!

The only way to find out if you are ovulating (besides paying money for ovulation tests) is to chart your morning temperature (before you get out of bed).  There are charts on the internet or you can just make a simple grid and mark down the temperature.  You have to use a basal temperature thermometer because it shows the close range you need to have.  Your temperature will go down to a low range at the time of your period. It will go up on the day you ovulate.  So you will see a pattern over several months and can determine from that picture whether you are ovulating or not.

This website:  http://www.nfpandmore.org/  has more detailed information and you can print a sample chart from there, too.  With irregular cycles you will need to pay close attention to the signs and symptoms of fertility.  But if you chart carefully you will have very good information to give to your doctor when you need to.  These signs and symptoms are not only indicators of your fertility but often of your general health, too.

I wish you the best.  sorry about the delay.  Write back if I can help any further.
