Pregnancy Loss: Symptoms and HCG Levels - Seeking Information

Question
Hi Sarah,
My LMP was Feb 24 2009. I missed my march due date on 21 march and took a hpt which was positive, Went to my doc's office, who confirmed my pregnancy and said I was 4 weeks along. But I started spotting and my HcG levels startd dropping. The nurse called me with my last blood work results on thursday saying I am miscarrying and the bleeding should start soon.My HcG levels were 171, 307 and then dropped to 88 on last thursday.
It did start bleeding this saturday with light cramps , sometimes severe, April 4 2009. We want to start trying again soon. Can you please advice us? Can I start trying right after the bleeding stops? I was supposed to be about 5 weeks pregnant when the levels started dropping.

thanks
Swathi

Answer
Hi Swathi
I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
You will find that the bleeding will increase & you may pass clots. This should then slow down to spotting. If the heavy bleeding lasts more than a couple of days, seek medical advice. It may be that the miscarriage is incomplete & tissue still remains.

There are different timescales given out for when to start trying again. Some say it's ok to start trying again once the bleeding has stopped, some say to wait until you have had a normal period once your miscarriage bleeding has stopped & others say to wait 3 months or 3 periods. This allows for the body to heal & build up a good uterine lining ready for the next pregnancy.
I have noticed that the incidence of recurrent miscarriage seems to lessen if you wait the full 3 months, although nothing guarantees you against a miscarriage. Some of my questioners who have suffered recurrent loss have fallen pregnant soon after a previous loss.

I think as well once you have lost a pregnancy, it's easy to feel that another pregnancy will soothe the hurt. It's natural to want to fall pregnant again as soon as possible, but you do need to weigh up the risks of recurrent miscarriage if this is done before your body has had time to get better. It's also important to heal emotionally & mentally. Grieve for your loss & allow yourself to move on before starting afresh.

My personal advice would be to wait for 3 months. It goes very quickly & will give you the time you need to prepare yourself for the next pregnancy. Miscarriage is most common in first pregnancies, so there is an excellent chance that the second pregnancy will go smoothly.

I do hope this has helped. I wish you the best of luck & do come back if you need any more help.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
