Depo Shot & Bleeding Changes: What to Know

Question
I have been taking the Depo shot for about 8 months now. I never had any side affects except at first I was very depressed. Other than that I was perfectly normal. In September for two week I had light spotting to a normal bleed. I don't know what caused this, I told my ob/gyn and they said bleeding was normal; the thing I thought was weird was I'd never blead before this and I don't bleed now. Lately I have been feeling signs of pregnancy: my breast are tender, I have frequent urination, I get easily irritated, and light headed at times. I don't know what I should do? Is it possible that the bleeding I had was from being pregnant? I haven't taken any tests yet.

Answer
Dear Bre

Although pregnancy seems to be a remote possibility, it is still possible. Failure of the shot may occur for a variety of reasons.

The first thing to do now should be a pregnancy test or preferably a transvaginal ultrasound to exclude pregnancy and other possible organic lesions such as uterine fibroids.

Further investigations will depend on the result of the ultrasound.

Good Luck
