Understanding HCG Levels and Miscarriage: A Personal Experience
QuestionHi Sarah,
I went to see my OB doctor on 4/15 I was having cramps in my pelvic region and I was concerned. He did a HCG quant and my levels were at 69 I was 5 wks 4 days pregnant he told me that I would miscarry soon and the next day 4/16 I started bleeding and passing clots. I took a HCG quant on 4/17 and my levels were 38. I continued to bleed until 4/20 my bleeding was completely gone on this day and I have not bled since then. My husband and I had unprotected sex on this day....it wasn't planned it just happened it had been so long since we had sex. Well I went to the doctor to have a HCG draw 4/28 and my levels are now 87. What could be the problem....ectopic....left over tissue....or could I be pregnant again. I would appreciate any advice that you can give me.
AnswerHello Trice
I would go back and see your OB/GYN, this needs to be diagnosed properly. A rise in hCG levels after a loss can be any one of the reasons you have listed, so it does need to be investigated.
You may have an ultrasound scan which involves taking a look at your tubes to make sure there isn't an ectopic pregnancy. They will also check for a new/twin pregnancy as well as seeing if you have retained any tissue. An ectopic pregnancy can be dangerous if left undetected/untreated & retained tissue can lead to infection, so it's important that you have at least some follow-up appointments & blood tests so you can be monitored. A scan may be carried out at a later date. Different hospitals have different procedures.
I hope this has helped.
Kindest Regards
Sarah
