QuestionHi,
I just discovered that i am pregnant and because of pain predominantly in one side I went to do an ultrasound to see if anything was wrong. I was then about 4+4. The doctor showed me the scan and said that the gestational sac was misshapen as it sound be smooth and round, while what i had had no defined lines and not perfectly round. I got really worried and asked her if there was hope. She said that my pregnancy is really early and so there is hope. But I was not convinced by her. I will go back to check in another two weeks. And now, after having searched the internet, I find no examples of this having gone well. Do you know anything about this?
AnswerHello Stine
A misshapen sac is unfortunately not normally a good sign.
Doctors usually have a good idea of what is going on but because it is still early in the pregnancy, they do like to wait and see how things go. It is indeed possible for the sac to fill out (or indeed stay irregular) and for a healthy full term pregnancy to grow, but a misshapen sac can be the first indication that the pregnancy isn't developing well or not at all.
I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum. This is when there's a gestational sac but no baby. It's believed that from conception, the embryo stops developing but everything else carries on. An ultrasound showed a smaller-than-dates irregular sac which was completely empty. I guess I knew at 5wks that something was wrong when I spotted, but they wouldn't investigate and I didn't have my miscarriage til 11wks. My sac measured just under 5wks.
The pain you are experiencing could be your body starting to miscarry. A sac can start to look misshapen once everything starts to break down. You may find that you'll start to bleed soon. Be prepared with large sanitary pads when you go out (you shouldn't use tampons) and if you do start to bleed whilst out, if you can get yourself home or to the home of a friend/family member. Make sure that you have some company to support you and assist you.
Every miscarriage is different & it can be an upsetting & frightening experience. I always say for your safety & peace of mind, have someone who you can trust close to hand who will be there should you need them.
I do hope the next ultrasound brings you some good news, it is absolutely possible that everything is fine, but it sounds like you may already be preparing yourself in case it isn't good news.
I'm here if you need any additional support or have any further questions.
Kindest Regards
Sarah
