QuestionI had a positive home pregnancy test 2 days ago. My LMP was 11/30/06. I had an ultrasound today. The uterine lining is thick but there was no sac identified. I am wondering if this is normal at 5 weeks and 1 day. I have great concern as I have been pregnant 4 times with 2 miscarriages, 2 ectopic (with loss of a fallopian tube) and 2 live births. I have PCOS and was not trying to conceive. I was on Metformin and believe that led to conception.
AnswerDear Cathy,
What a whirlwind for you! I would be interested to know what your beta hCG levels were. Often if these levels are >1500 and no gestational sac is seen on ultrasound, an ectopic or miscarriage should be ruled out.
The metformin may very well have led to the conception and pregnancy. It is a medication that has traditionally been used to control diabetes. But they have recently begun to use it to treat patients with PCOS to induce regular ovulation and thus increase fertility.
At 5 weeks+1 day, a gestational sac should be visible via ultrasound, especially if it were trans-vaginal ultrasound. A fetus may not be clearly visible yet, but a gestational sac with yolk sac would be.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and will have a good thought for you.
