High Bilirubin Levels: Causes, Concerns & What to Expect
QuestionI had a blood test last week and tested high on biliruben. I had a second test which showed it was lower a week later but still above where it needs to be. My doctor is having me do a scan on my gull blader next week. Should I be concerned. I wonder if there is a conection b/t high biliruben and cancer?
AnswerHello, how are you? I do not think there is a direct connection between high billirubin and cancer. When bilirubin levels are high, it could be due to a condition called jaundice. A high bilirubin may mean that too much is being produced usually due to hemolysis or that the liver is not capable of adequately removing bilirubin in a timely manner. This may be due to blockage of bile ducts, or liver diseases such as cirrhosis, acute hepatitis, or inherited problems with bilirubin production and handling. In adults or older children, bilirubin is measured to diagnose and/or monitor liver diseases, such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, or gallstones. Patients with sickle cell disease or other types of hemolytic anemia may also show signs of increased bilirubin levels. I do not think there is a direct connection between cancer and high bilirubin, but you should really consult with your physician for further information. He/She should be able to answer all your questions and concerns. Thank you.
