Understanding Elevated Pulse Rate After Blood Donation: Causes & Concerns

Question
Hello!

Thanks for taking time to answer my question.  I am an 18
year old female, who every time I've gone to donate blood have a
high pulse rate, even after I've been sitting for an half hour, and
am not really nervous about needles.  I don't smoke, drink
alcohol, coffee, or soda with caffeine in it, and I'm 5'8" and close
to 150 pounds.

Someone once told me that if you're in shape, then your pulse
rate is slower.  Could this be the reason why my pulse is so
high?  I'm in the marching band 6 hours a week, and I walk or
ride my bike around campus and outside of my college campus.

If this is the case, should I change some of my eating and
exercise habits?  Also, let me know if you think I should see a
physician.  The only genetic problems I know of is that my
mother's father had a heart attack and currently has high blood
pressure.  Any advice or explanations as to my high pulse rate
would be greatly appreciated!  I would really like to be able to
donate blood when these blood drives come around again.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Andrea,
As a rule an 18 year old female with no health problems should not have a high pulse rate, especially after being at rest. I wouldn't think marching band would cause your pulse to rise and STAY up. You don't tell what the pulse rate is, but anything over 100 at rest should be evaluated by a healthcare provider to rule out the possibility of underlying disease.
