Post-Accident Lab Results: Understanding Elevated Creatinine, AST, and ALT

Question
I had a accident and flipped my vehicle, the next day I had some lab work and it came back a little abnormal. Creatine 1.09, AST 51, and ALT 68. She was not concerned but I was wondering if they were elevated because of my accident. I am healthy otherwise, no medical problems. Only take birth control. Thanks

Answer
Hi Sara.  Your three lab tests you mentioned in your question (creatinine, AST, and ALT), while abnormal, may or may not (probably not) be a result of your accident.  First, your creatinine level is only slightly high.  You didn't mention your age, but creatinine does increase with age, so this level may be normal for you.  AST and ALT are both liver enzymes.  They will be increased with liver disease and/or damage.  But your levels aren't dramatically elevated, as would be seen with liver damage from a car accident.  You would probably need further testing to determine the cause for the increase in AST and ALT.
