Getting Pregnant After Stopping Birth Control: What to Expect
QuestionWould it be a bad idea to start trying to get pregnant right away after stopping birth control. I have read conflicting information in several books/magazines/websites. I know it might not happen right away, but I would like to start trying. My OB/GYN said to wait for 2 cycles at my pre-preg screening but is this necessary? I have only been on birth control pills for 6 moths before that I used a diaphragm. Thanks!
AnswerHello,
I would definately recommend waiting at least 2 cycles before trying. There are many reasons that doctor's recommend this. The first is that you want to have a normal period so you know where to count from to determine your due date when you get pregnant. When on the pill, your periods are not "real" periods as you don't ovulate on the pill. Also, it takes some time for the hormones to leave your body and it would not be ideal for the baby if you did conceive right away, to have those artificial hormones in your system. For many people, it is hard to get pregnant right away anyway, because those hormones are still there and it takes time to start ovulating again. Good luck.
