QuestionHi Dr. Ramirez. I am from the state of PA. I unfortunately got hives from some cough medicine that I took over the weekend and started an eight-day tapering dose of prednisone today. I started with a total dose of 60 mg for two days and so on. I am expecting ovulation to occur in a few days and trying to conceive and was wondering if this will hinder ovulation or fertility in any way. I know it can be problematic for those taking high doses for chronic conditions but was not sure about this situation of being on a short course. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Melodie
AnswerHello Melodie from the U.S. (Pennsylvania),
The prednisone will not affect pregnancy. In fact, it is used in patients that have recurrent pregancy loss, as well as, in IVF protocols.
I don't understand why you were given prednisone for a mild allergic reaction, however. Bendadryl probably would have been enough or a similar anti-histamine. Prednisone is a little over-kill.
Good Luck,
