Veganism and Fertility in Teen Girls: A Comprehensive Guide

Question
I am 16 and I am very interested in switching over from a vegetarian to a fully vegan diet.  My only concern is that I have not yet gotten my first period.  I am very healthy though and I would like to know if veganism would help or hinder my current situation.

Answer
Hi
Becoming vegan could affect menstruation (and fertility), because you may not consume adequate quantities of fat or protein to ensure adequate hormone production. However this could also be true of a vegetarian diet (and to be honest any diet). I recommend you visit your doctor to see if they think your lack of menstruation is a cause for concern. If you think you need further nutritional advice after that, please contact a nutritional therapist or naturopath.
