Questionhi there my name is sophie i am 39yr old, and from blackpool, ok in December 07 i had a huge ovarian cyst removed it weighed over 121b prior to the op i had a bleeding dudenal ulcer in which i lost 4 pints of blood and had a blood transfusion, i on medication for it but have problems eating solid foods and been dilated 3 times but still not much better, anyway after my operation i was left with huge scar which is only cosmetic as i hear to tell my story and ask of your opinion which i will be most grateful for, when i was let home from hospital i got appointment to the clinic just to see how everything was after surgery, i was given a smear test which came back with huge amount abnormalities, i then had to go back to hospital for biopsy also came back with abnormalities, so i was booked into hospital as day patient to have the cells burnt away, then went back for another test , i was called back in to see Mr willcocks who said to me i had lot of cells still there and the best thing would be a total hysterectomy , but he did not think i was strong enough to have the op straight away as i still under the hospital for my gastric problems , i was distraught could not beleive this was happening to me after having the op and both my ovaries taken , so he said to me that he cant express enough how i would have to go to the appointment he would send me as i not handling it very well at all, i think he could see the fear on my face, anyway about a week later i was called back for another smear taken , and i received a letter last week saying my results came back negative and made me another appointment in 6 mths time , i don't understand why i was put through the trauma of telling me how important it was of us being ahead of it rather than that being ahead of me , im worried now and confused , hope you understand my letter to you as i not very educated in the words and sayings of the doctors .
Many Thanks Sophie Halpin
from blackpool .
AnswerDear Sophie,
Thanks from the question, and thank you for letting me know where you are from. I'm always curious to see where my answers are going to.
If I understand you correctly, when they took out that Ovarian tumor, they removed your other ovary as well. So, in fact, you do not have ovaries any more. I wonder why they didn't just take your uterus at that time. Without ovaries, your uterus has not function. Except, if you want to become pregnant in the future using donor eggs, then the eggs can be implanted into your uterus.
It sounds like the abnormality you had on the cervix was not very serious. However, because you have no ovaries, your doctor probably thought it best to remove the uterus, which is the final treatment for cervix abnormalities. Now that the cervical abnormality has resolved, it is not a necessity but might be something to consider in the future.
I cannot say why your doctor presented that information to you in such a traumatic way, as I don't have the results. That is just his style, I presume. Doctors have different personalities and some are better at explaining to patients and some are not. That is what makes us different.
I hope this helps,
