Positive Pregnancy Test with Low Basal Temperature: What It Means

Question
QUESTION: HI, my name is elvie. I had hcg injection on day 13. i took pregnancy test on day 28 and its positive but i had low BBT. i read that u could get false positive result with hcg injections but the thing it should be gone on 12-14 days after the injection and i did the pregnancy test 16 days after the shot. now with BBT - it should remain HIGH if you are pregnant. Help, do u think im pregnant? i cant wait anymore..

ANSWER: Hello Elvie,

Thank you for your question.  There is certainly the possiblity that you are pregnant.  The problem withe the home pregnancy test is that it can only detect positives if the BHCG (pregnancy) level is above a certain point.  In your case, you are checking pretty early, so your level would still be low.  You have two choices.  You can have a blood pregnancy test run by your doctor to confirm, which is probably the best option, or you can wait a week and repeat the test again.  Don't worry about the HCG injection cross-over.  It should have been gone from your system by day # 28.

Please let me know where you are writing from.

QUESTION: Thank you for your answer. I am from Minessota. I will definitely call my OB tomorrow(Sept.1,2008) and ask about this. And i have another question, is it true that when u get low BBT, i have risk of miscarriage? I had one miscarriage already. If so, do I need progesterone shot to get the pregnancy going? I been trying to get pregnant for 3 years. I really wanna get pregnant. Also, how accurate is BBT? My bbt dropped 0.6 from my previous one on day 13. It made me sad thinking im going to get my period. But I have hopes bec my pregnancy test is Positive.  Sorry, This is making me crazy...

Answer
Hi Again Elvie,

If the BHCG is low, sometimes it can indicate that a miscarriage will occur.  Progesterone will not help in that case because there is something wrong with the pregnancy.  This interpretation can only be made by a blood pregnancy test, not a home pregnancy test.

The BBT is a guide only.  It cannot be relied upon as definitive so don't try.  If you have not achieve pregnancy in three years, you should be seeing a fertility specialist.

Try not to worry about it too much.  Worry and stress can prevent pregnancy as well and has been well documented.  If you are in the hands of a competent fertility specialist, then pregnancy will happen.  It is just a matter of time.  I generally recommend that patients see a Physician that does ALL levels of fertility treatments: fertility drugs, IUI and IVF.  If you doctor doesn't then you should find one that does.  Only this type of doctor has all the expertise and available options to counsel and treat you the best.
