Positive Pregnancy Test After Abortion: Understanding Potential Causes

Question
It has been 16 weeks since my abortion, I do remember having a period somewhere in between, but I haven't in some time. I remember my doctor saying future periods would be irregular, but I took a pregnancy test anyway and tested positive. Is there anyway this could be a false positive? (ie hormones still in my system??)

Answer
Hello, Edna,

If your abortion was surgical, at this point, it is very unlikely your positive test means anything other than a new pregnancy. All abortions disrupt a woman's hormones, but pill abortions are worse. However, I wouldn't expect a positive test this long after a pill abortion, either. If you are taking certain kinds of hormones, this could explain it, however. I assume you have been having sex, or contact in the area. There are no forms of "protection" that truly work. Pulling out doesn't work, and if a man leaves a drop of fluid close to the opening, it will occasionally cause pregnancy.

Whatever you do, don't have another abortion! You may have been lucky the first time and not suffered any obvious consequences. But every abortion causes damage to a woman's body. Every abortion makes a woman much more prone to breast cancer, especially if she has never had a child. The form of breast cancer is particularly deadly, killing 1/4 of its victims, and it can strike as early as in a woman's 30's. Surgical abortion also causes damage to the uterus that is likely to affect a future pregnancy, can result in miscarriage, tubal pregnancy, very early birth with serious birth defects, problems with birth requiring a Caesarian section, and other problems. It can cause infertility. The more abortions a woman has, the more damage is done. It is impossible to do an abortion without damaging a woman's body simply because we have so many built-in protections to protect our child. Getting into a cycle of having repeat abortions is also not a good thing, and a second abortion is the start of such a cycle. There are only three ways to stop the cycle: carry the baby to term, stop having sex, or become unable to conceive at all. Abortion can kill you or cause serious disability such as paralysis, inability to speak, and coma. Pill abortion can cause hemorrhage, rupture of the uterus, and toxic shock syndrome. Hemorrhage and toxic shock syndrome are deadly. Once a woman develops symptoms from toxic shock syndrome, there is no known treatment that can save her life. If they're not telling you these things when you go for an abortion, they are not getting your informed consent, and are engaging in malpractice. Abortion is malpractice anyway because it is unethical. Because of the damage it does to a healthy woman, it is a violation of the principle, "First do no harm."

If you are pregnant, I recommend you go to a doctor and have him test to see how viable the pregnancy is. About 1/4 of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Obviously, if you were to have a miscarriage, you wouldn't need to do anything except get checked afterward, and follow up with any necessary medical care. Find a decent doctor who truly cares about you, who will protect you. Also, there is help available if you are facing the same problems you faced when you decided to have an abortion the first time. There are organizations all over the United States that provide counseling, help with medical and financial issues (and can recommend a good doctor to you now), clothing, furniture, and supplies for a baby, and help with adoption. You deserve better than abortion, and you deserve to hear what they have to say. You may even be able to get a free ultrasound; some of these organizations are able to provide this service.
