Weak Positive Pregnancy Test: Causes, Symptoms & What To Do

Question
hi , I am 26 yrs. i do not have any children yet. i m married for 3 yrs 4 months now. my problem is i had my last menstrual period on the 10th august 2005 and i did not get my periods in september. i vomitted on 15th september in the morning with pain in stomach. i took a pregnancy test on the 19th and the test area on the casette showed a weaker line compared to the control area. i visited my doc in the evning and she told me to take another test on 23rd and advised me to take uterone tablets to confirm the pregnancy. i repeated the test on 23rd and again it showed a light pinkish line in the test area. i called my doc and she advised me to do a Beta- HCG test. i m really apprehensive after she told me this. Am i pregnant? if so why is there such a weak indication of it? also for your information i was detected with PCOS (poly cystic)in july after not being able to get my periods regularly. i was given medication to regularise my periods. does this have any effect ? please help. i will be taking the beta-HCG test tommmorrow. in the meanwhile please help.

Answer
In order to be considered positive, both lines on the pregnancy test should be dark and  bold. A scant or light line is an equivocal test and must be repeated. It may have been done too early in the pregnancy. If your last period started on August 10, then by now a pregnancy test would be accurate. You may not be doing the test correctly. The best way to tell if you are pregnant is with two blood tests for pregnancy (Beta HCG) 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a viable pregnancy. If there is a halving of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a miscarriage. If both results are less tan 5, it means you were never pregnant. Just wait for the test. There is nothing to do at this time.
