Understanding Infertility After Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Guide

Question
To whom it may concern:
I have 4 children 2 girls and 2 boys which i thank GOD for them everyday because they turned out to be wonderful children, considering the fact that i raised them by myself without a father i'm very proud of them because they all graduated from high school and all went to college, but my oldest daughter who is 29 now and married can not have children because when she was 10 years old she was raped by a family member and she had her right ovary removed. she's been trying to come out pregnant for the last 2 years but she can't what do you recommend that she do....

Answer
Hello Joyce from the U.S.,

The first recommendation is for her to see a fertility specialist.  Not a general Ob/Gyn but someone who does all levels of infertility testing and treatments, including IVF.

Having had surgery and one ovary removed, it is possible that the problem is scar tissue formation within the pelvis, that prevents the egg from getting into the tubes.  So the process for her to become pregnant ends right at the second step.  This can be checked for my doing an outpatient surgical procedure called laparoscopy.  If scar tissue is present and not too bad, and the tubes are normal, the scar tissue (adhesions) can be removed and she may be able to achieve pregnancy naturally.  If the scar tissue is real bad, then she may have to do IVF.  I tell my patients that there are always options for achieving pregnancy.  It is just a matter of determining what is the best treatment option.

Good Luck,
