Twin Birth Complications: Uterine Rupture & Preterm Delivery - A Mother's Story

Question
My daughter had twins 1 1/2 yrs. ago when she was 22 yrs. old. Her daughter born first @ 32 wks gestation came natural weighing in at 3lb 10 oz and 15" While she was small my daughter screamed in pain and they sent me out immediately after her birth and did an immediate C on my grandson who came in weighting 5lbs 1 oz and 17 1/2". They told me her uterus ruptured on the back side and they had to get him out.  They had no reason why this would happen as her first child born 2 yrs prior only weighed 5 lbs. 10 oz full term. They suggest she should not have anymore children because now she has had the scar of a c section, and twins run in the family her maternal grandmother was a twin also.  What would be the reason of this rare occurence?

Answer
Unfortunately, unexplained catastrophic uterine ruptures do happen.  It may have been the stress of the twin pregnancy, although this is uncommon at 32 weeks.  But sometimes there just is no explanation.  Pregnancy after a uterine rupture can sometimes work out, if the rupture was repaired, but an early c-section is always recommended.  She can seek out a second opinion on this, but should stick with the recommendations of her doctors.

I'm glad to hear everybody came out okay.
