Understanding Secondary Infertility: Causes, Symptoms & What to Do

Question
Hi,
I am Debbie from NY, 33yr old female. I have a beautiful 2.5yr old girl. (It took about 6 mths to conceive her). My husband and I have been trying for #2 for five months. I took few ovulation kits and all appear positive on day 15. I get my menstrual period every 28-30 days. I try and aim sex for days 11,13 & 15. I have read there is something called "secondary infertility" which is starting to worry me? is there anything I am doing wrong? what advice can u give me besides the relax and it will happen :)I have also used pre-seed lubricant during TTC days because I hardly have any cervical mucus which makes it hard to have sex

Answer
Hello Debbie from the U.S.,

You are jumping the gun a little.  We define infertility as the inability to become pregnant after 12 months of trying in a woman under the age of 36.  So by that definition, you do not have secondary infertility.  Since you have been pregnant before and have regular menstrual cycles, might I suggest the following calendar method:

Cycle day #1      Start of your period.  Mark your calendar.
CD#10             Stop all intercourse and ejaculation (to conserve sperm)
CD#13-17          Have intercourse once per day each of these days and only one ejaculation per episode
CD#18+            You can go back to your normal activity.

I would also recommend that you take a prenatal vitamin and take low dose aspirin (81mg) per day starting with your period.

If you do not achieve pregnancy within the next 7 months, then it will be time to see a fertility specialist.  In the meantime, use this calendar method and above all, have a good time.  DON'T make it a chore!
