Post-PE & DVT Recovery: Seeking Information & Advice

Question
Hi Swissdoc,

In 2002, I had a pulmonary embolism and DVT in that order. I got them by "stupidly" driving nonstop 21+ hours twice while moving from NY to Florida. I got the DVT 8 months after the PE. All my blood work for both was negative for Factor V Leiden, Protein C, etc. My blood pressure is 110/69 and my resting pulse rate is 48-50 comsistently. The results of my physicals are excellent(I'm 54). I'm 5'10", weigh 165 and have 11% body fat. I had a Greenfield Filter installed after the DVT. Every now and then, my right ankle swells slightly when I'm on my feet all day. I've heard of the possibility of surgical repair to fix a weakness in the vein in my calf where the DVT may have come from. Have you heard of this? And, if so, what is the procedure and how do I inquire about it-thanks?

Answer
dear dave:
there are different procedures to correct venous insufficiency. a phlebologist or vascular surgeon can help you further. however, with the minimal symptoms you have (an  occasional ankle swelling) i would not recommend to do anything about it.
