Question -
Hello. I'm a 37 year old female, and I was wondering about my mother. She is 70 years old, physically fit, and tries to eat healthy and exercise. The problem is she has a dry cough quite often. This has been going on for quite sometime now. She doesn't smoke and never has. She does have a high sugar level, and rather high blood pressure. As far as I know, the medication she takes for these illnesses don't cause the cough. She has been to doctors, but so far I don't know anything yet. She had X-rays done and has to go back to the doctor again. So, I was wondering what could this be? Could it be something serious, or not? I hope you can shed some light on this situation. Any info you can offer, I would greatly appreciate.

Thanks so much,
Diamond

This is usually to the ACE inhibitor blood pressure medicine she is probably taking. If so they will need to change her to an ACE II or she will need to take an iron tablet 1 hour before her blood pressure med to block the cough side effect. OK?
Can you find out what meds she is on? Gastric reflux can cause a cough but not a dry cough. OK?

Answer
Yes, this Lotrel is a combination of a calcium channel blocker and and ACE I which causes this dry cough. If OK with her doctor she can take an iron tablet 1 hour before each dose to block the cough or the doctor can switch her to an ACE II like Hyzaar which does not cause this dry cough nearly as much. OK?
