QuestionMy 79 year old mother-in-law has been on Exelon 3mg 2x day for several years. I feel she has mild dementia, but not altzheimer's disease, and honestly this drug is expensive! I need to know how she can quit taking this drug, if it needs to be gradual. I have read not to start taking this drug again, to do it strictly under a doctor's instructions. Thank you for your time.

discontinuation of this drug should NOT be abruptly stopped. some adverse effects are dose related and may abate if the dose is decreased. slow withdrawal of the drug is indicated if it is not tolerated. a discontinuation syndrome has been reported.
sudden decline in thinking may happen[acute deterioration of cognitive abilities];
i suggest talking with her doctor before doing anything.
