Understanding Elevated CK Levels: Causes, Symptoms, and What to Expect

Question
This past weekend I went to the emergency room because I was not feeling myself.  I also experienced chest and upper back pain (around the shoulder blades)

The hospital did a series of test on me.  All came back positive but the one the showed an elevation of CPK to be over 5,000.  They tested it twice and the results came back the same.  They decided to keep me overnight.  The released me the next afternoon but it had only dropped to 4,000.

I don't even understand what this means, what made this happen, what i am supposed to do from now on or what the long term effect could be.  Please help me to understand.

One week prior I begin working out, using light free weights.  I was not getting the burst of energy I thought I should have gotten.  As a matter of fact, I took a week of because I was just too exhausted to go back to the gym last week.

I was instructed to take another test at a local lab, which I did on yesterday, to see if the was a decline in the level.  I am waiting for my result which should be available in a day or two.

Your help and knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Carla Johnson.

Answer
high cpk can be from muscle damage if you over did it... it could come from other causes that can damage the kidneys.... if you are on any cholesterol meds, stop them;  hold off on weights and get the CPK rechecked in a couple of days.

Hope this helps...
