Dilantin and Constipation: Understanding the Connection

Question
While my constipation is slowly working itself by taking a ratio-Lactulose Solution in addition to the fibre I am wondering about the drug dilantin.

I hae been taking one 2,5 MB tablet for a number of years for control of IBS long before I was diagnosed with diverticulosis.

During this period of constipation I stopped the lomotil, but as it as I understand it is a narcotic should I have stopped it completely?

Possibly my colon has dependent on it.

Answer
that is true... colons can become dependent on lomotil and people may get some diarrhea or cramps if stopping it quickly, but it is such a mild one, that the symptoms would be mild.  You also have to be concerned about timing... if you take Lactulose along w/ Dilantin, you might not absorb it as well as you normally would...  But, overall, Lomotil is a pretty mild drug, but not something you should take along with diverticulosis....  probably just increased fiber and avoiding foods that aggravate the IBS.
