Possible Nerve Damage After Facial Injury: Symptoms & Recovery

Question
My husband recently fell aproximately five feet and landed on his left cheek bone in a pile of rocks.  It broke the skin, he went to the doctor, stitches were not needed.  The next morning his face was feeling okay, then the second morning, he woke up and his whole left side of his face was completely numb.  He went back to the doctor, and the doctor said there was possible nerve damage.  He said that it should heal by itself, and that he is supposed to be set up for a CT scan.  He has a hard time eating/drinking etc.  He is also feeling heat and itchiness, that just won't go away.  Is there anything that I could do to help his face to regain feeling in it?  Or is there anything special that we should do?

Answer
this may be a pinched nerve from the swelling from the injury, but he definitely needs a cat scan of the facial bones and head right away... to make sure there isn't a broken bone resting against a nerve or a bruise internally that is pressing on the nerve.
