Hello again, I had a question about something that happened to
me my first time swimming this year.
I was standing on the step and jumped forcefully into the pool,
with movement of my head, not hitting anything..but yet, when I
jumped in and my head kind of jolted ahead of me, I landed in
the water and started walking slowly, I felt kind of light headed,
no pain or anything, so I wouldn't guess I got a concussion, its
not a big deal or anything, but I have no clue what caused that
feeling in my head..I think the forceful movement of the head,
but I didn't hit anything on my head..so, Do you know of any
possibilities of what could have caused that? Please let me
know..Thanks.

Hi Nick,
That might have caused the dizziness. Jolts to the head can occur with sudden sharp movements.
The brain is like jello in a bowl. The brain rotates and bangs on the side of the skull and can
cause episodes like you describe. The effects are transitory. If symptoms continue, I‘d have a
healthcare provider check you out.

But what had ocurred wouldn't be described as a concussion, would it? Is this common and do
you think I should expect long term affects?

Answer
Hi Nick,
Techincally, anything that causes trauma to the brain from whatever cause and causes a neurologic episode, would be called a concussion by definition. As for long term side effects, not all concussions have those and based on what you wrote, I wouldn‘t expect that to be your case.
