High ALT Level: What Does It Mean? Causes & Concerns

Question
I just had a physical for work and my alt level showed as being in the high range (74) The norm range on the paperwork was 21-72 so i am not extremely high. The Dr cleared me for work (I am a firefighter) and did not recommend anything on the paperwork for the level. Should I be concerned? I see on the web that the normal high range for alt is 40 but my paperworks shows a normal range of 21-72 - I drink on rare ocassions and I do have a few extra pounds on (37 years old also)

Answer
Hi Ron,
The ALT is one of a number of measured enzymes for liver disease. It is the most specific. An elevation such as yours may mean nothing and just bears repeating in a month or so to be sure that it isn't changing.
Different labs have different cut offs for normal ranges, so don't look at other lab's results and measure yours in that way.
