Understanding Yellow-Brown Stools in 3-Year-Olds: Causes & Concerns
QuestionHello,
My daughter just turned 3. She drinks alot of milk still. Milk is the only fluid she will drink. I have tried and tried to give her water, juice everything but she is very stubborn and insist on just drinking milk. Her stools when she poop are usually yellow brownish, kind of like mustard. They are hard usually because she holds her poop for so long. I have read that pale color stools are a sign of diseases. I am very concerned, I did bring this up to our doctor and he was not worried and said it's because of all the milk she consumes in a day. Sometimes is could look, yellow, green. She is very healthy but very tiny. I am very tiny as well. She weighs 23lbs and is about 31 inches. She has been in the 3percentile since she was born. I am only 5ft all and 95lbs. The doctor said she is just tiny like me. I read that malabsorption could course these color of stools, does this sound like something I should worry about. She has been to the doctor in the past for anal fissures from her constipation. Sometimes she has blood when I wipe her after she moves her bowels. She is otherwise very healthy, as tons of energy and very advance for her age. While looking on the internest I keep finding pale stools are not normal. What is considered pale? Can it be normal for children her age to have light color stools such as yellow, green or very light brown. any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Darlene
AnswerHi Dejay,
Stool color is often based on what foods the person takes in. If she is otherwise healthy, I wouldn't worry about the color. Her stool are probably hard because she is slightly dehydrated from not drinking water.
If she won't drink water, you might try adding Benefiber to her milk in an attempt to keep her stools softer and easier to get rid of.
